The Rose Abrão 10 String Guitar Festival completed 29 years in 2012. This is the oldest and most important roots music festival known in the country.

It is already known in the whole country for maintaining in its essence the Brazilian roots tradition and culture, as well as revealing new roots music talents. Some of the important names that have participated in this festival are: Rio Negro & Solimões, Zé Henrique & Gabriel, Durval & Davi, Ze do Cedro & João do Pinho, Gedeão da Viola, Edmauro e Edivaldo (Violeiros da Amazônia), Itamaracá, among others.

A presentation with a 10 String guitar is obligatory to maintain traditions and authenticity of the genuine Brazilian roots music. The main theme of most of these songs is about the Rodeo, its lifestyle, the clothing style and habits picked up by being on the road for so long. Although the theme is free, the songs have the vocabulary used by people who live the true roots music.

No concurso é obrigatória a apresentação com uma viola de 10 cordas, para manter a tradição e as raízes da genuína música sertaneja. Como tema, grande parte das canções falam Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro, seu estilo de vida, suas vestimentas e costumes estradeiros. Embora o tema seja livre, as canções buscam a cada nova edição, manter suas bases, com palavras e vocabulários usados tão somente entre pessoas que vivem a verdadeira música raiz.

History of the Festival

The Festival happened initially in some of the towns neighbourhoods gathering 10 string guitar players from all corners of the country. As of 1993, the Festival was named after Rose Abrão, immortalizing one of the 10 string guitar player’s greatest friends making patron of one of the main festivals of its kind.

Gaze Abrão, which was his real name, was a cereal merchant and lover of roots music. He was born on the 30th of March 1936 in Ibitu a district of the town of Barretos. He was married to Dona Rosa for 34 years and had always lived on the 17th Avenue, N°1126, corner of 28th Street until he moved in 1984 to 30th Street, N°118, corner of 47th Avenue where to this day the famous “Sobrado da Alegria” , 10 string guitar player headquarters according to João Pacífico, honorary judge of the festival, in his signature book with all 10 string guitar players that have been through the festival.

The “ Sobrado da Alegria” was the stage for many friendships, musical encounters, lyrics and songs that flowed at every moment like the notes on a musical score. It was an inevitable stop for admirers of good roots music. Some of the greatest names in roots music have passed by this place such as: Tião Carreiro e Pardinho, Almir Sater, Antonio Borba, Pena Branca e Xavantinho, Suzamar, Ronaldo Viola e João Carvalho, Cesar e Paulinho, Mocóca e Paraiso, Carreirinho, Amarai, Dino Franco e Morai, Sula Mazurega, Dalvan, Adalto Santos, João Pacifico and many others.

Known as the “Godfather of 10 string guitar players”, a nickname given to him by Tião Carreiro, “Uncle Rose” died on the 29th of January 1993. The first and second festivals were organized by the late Alaor de Avila, and from the third edition onwards the festival has been organized by Wilson Garcia (Bezerrão).

Inezita Barroso (Marvada Pinga), Almir Sater (Chalana), Renato Teixeira (Romaria), Rolando Boldrin (Vide Vida Marvada), Cascatinha e Inhana (Índia), Belmonte e Amaraí (Entre Lágrimas), Luizinho e Limeira (Menino da Porteira), Tião Carreiro e Pardinho (Pagode em Brasília), João Pacífico (Cabocla Tereza), Lourival dos Santos (Saudade de Minha Terra), Pena Branca e Xavantinho (Cio da Terra). These names show the value and importance of roots music in the Brazilian music context through the times and this is what the 10 String Guitar Festival has been preserving during these 27 years.
