History

The Barretos Rodeo started in 1956 as the first event of its kind in Latin America. Since its first edition, which was held under a circus tent, until now, not only has the event grown and made a name for itself, it has become the most important Brazilian back country cultural reference. With its international repercussion it has become part of the agenda for cowboys the world over.

With its 50th Anniversary in 2005, the Barretos Rodeo is highlighted in the national scene as one of the oldest entertainment events in the country, with a history of growth, success and projection.

1950`s

Flâmula da Fundação de Os Independentes

Foundation of “Os Independentes” on the 15th of July, 1955. The first Barretos Rodeo happens in 1956, for two days, with performances of Catira (a typical Brazilian country dance), Brazilian Folklore dances, 10 String guitar groups, the Queima do Alho (a typical cattle drive cook-off contest) and Ox –cart parades with folklore groups. At that time there was no Rodeo Queen contest - the club would choose a girl from town to represent the event. The first celebrations were held under rented circus tents, from circus owners Patativa and Fubeca. During this decade the rodeo was already the main attraction of the event thrilling spectators that identified themselves with the mix of sport and daily farm handling. The rodeo substituted the “Cavalhada tournaments”, which symbolized the fight of the Christians against the Moors.

1.955

On the 15th of July, a group of 20 young men seated at a bar in the town of Barretos, state of São Paulo, found `Os Independentes`. Whoever wanted to join the club should be over 18 years of age, single and financially independent, as the intention of the group was to gather funds for assisting entities during the town`s anniversary celebrations. It was also established that the presidential term would last a year, but could be extended for a second year. For being the originator of the idea, Antonio Renato Prata is the first President.

The 1st Barretos Rodeo takes place during the 25th and 26th of August, under an old circus tent at the Paulo de Lima Correa enclosure. This is the first official event of its kind in Brazil. 1980’s

During the 80’s many significant changes happened to consolidate the Rodeo as the biggest country event in Brazil.

At the beginning of the decade the riders official clothes are no longer the bombachas, which are breeches typically worn by the Gaucho horsemen, the neck scarf, the knee high buckled boots and the wide leather belt, known as a “guaiaca”. Influenced by the American cowboys, tight fitting jeans and a leather belt with a buckle take over as the new official riding clothes.

In 1980 the Club expands its asset base after acquiring almost 240 acres of land for the installation of the Parque do Peão. The internationalization of the Barretos Rodeo began with the bull riding event in 1983. The 30th Edition of the Rodeo happened in this new venue in 1985, with thousands of visitors flocking from all over the country. In 1989 the Rodeo Arena was inaugurated. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer it has a seating capacity for 35 thousand spectators. Also during this period, the First 10 String Guitar Contest was held, the First Junior Cowboy Rodeo happened and Brazilian Presidents João Figueiredo and José Sarney both attended the event.
